This project consists of the science-oriented Plant Group and Balance and Restoration Group, and the Social Group that conducts humanities-oriented research, and is working to develop ways to deal with the deterioration of the global environment from a broad perspective.
Advanced Research Center for Natural Disaster Risk Reduction (NDRR)
The 21st century is experiencing natural disasters such as massive earthquakes, intense localized rainstorms that cause flooding and mud flows in watersheds, and complex disasters combining heavy rains and earthquakes. The objective of NDRR is to conduct studies on the significant risks posed by such natural disasters and to advance disaster mitigation research to reduce these risks.
Advanced Research Center for Seismic Experiments and Computations (ARCSEC)
In the Tokai region of Japan, the occurrence of a massive earthquake is feared-- the worst-case scenario assumes that earthquakes will occur simultaneously in three different regions. In this light, ARCSEC is working on research relating to efficient seismic reinforcement for structures to protect residents and social infrastructure from damage.
